Obidos the Medieval Hill top Town and Castle a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Located on Portugal’s Silver Coast about one hour drive North from Lisbon.
Is hosting one of its most popular annual events again this summer one of the best in the area The Medieval Fair will be held from 16th till 26th July 2009.
You can enjoy an authentic medieval atmosphere flowing vibrant banners and heraldic flags, wizards, jugglers, court jesters, wandering minstrels, musicians,mimes and thespians provide the vivacious merriment. Craft demonstrators and some 150 food, beverage and merchandise vendors recreate the customs and spirit of medieval Europe. The afternoon concludes with four jousting knights on horseback. To add to the theme the fair has it’s own coinage the “torreoes” which can be exchanged for the many exciting things on offer from medieval clothing to shoes, jewellery, or even experience a medieval meal, it’s all part of the fun for the whole family.
Obidos originally a 5th century Roman settlement later became a Moorish fortification it was captured from them by the first King of Portugal in 1148. Later in 1210 King Afonso 11 gave the town to his wife, Queen Urraca has a wedding gift. Since then Óbidos has belonged to the Queens of Portugal, giving rise to its informal title as Vila das Rainhas or in English the Queen’s village.
The Magnificent Castle and Town is a wonderful day out if you are not able to make the Fair its still well worth the effort with plenty of bars and restaurants it really comes to life in the evening and if you would like to stay longer stop in the Castle’s hotel or Pousada a fairy tall ending for any princess.
